WHEN Lala Anthony first came out with Lala’s Full Court Wedding as a reality TV show, we enjoyed it as it was a breath of fresh air compared to the other basketball reality series.

Since she was marrying NBA player Carmelo “Melo” Anthony, it was a pretty cool idea to make a show out of it.

Then came the sequel, Lala’s Full Court Life; a look at married life after the Anthonys’ wedding. That was a great idea as well. Since Lala has serious TV and radio experience, the show looks and feels right whether you are a basketball fan or not.

Yet there is an issue with the fact that Lala’s Full Court Life is now five seasons old. Without a fresh focus, the concept is starting to get a bit stale.

Carmelo is a great NBA player and probably a future hall of famer. Yet Lala has seemingly fallen off the celebrity wagon and seems to be holding on to the fact that she’s married to Melo.

Of course, it helps to be friends with people like Kelly Rowland who appear on the show every now and then, but if we get down to the heart of it all, there isn’t much to her so-called full-court life.

For now, Melo seems to be the focus of the show, even though Lala is supposed to be the star.

In the last NBA season, the New York Knicks player opted out of his contract, weighing up his options after the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers apparently approached him.

If he’d gone to Chicago, it would have meant playing for the same team that the great Michael Jordan once played for. Any NBA player looks forward to that prospect. On the other hand, Los Angeles not only promised Magic Johnson’s colours, but a stint in Hollywood. Sadly for both teams, Melo re-signed with the Knicks and is still there.

This NBA update is just to help you understand things from Lala’s perspective. If her man decided to move, it would have meant a great show with a new angle for her to exploit.

In fact, if he decided to play in LA, then her TV plans would have worked out really well because that’s where most shows like hers are shot. We are talking titles like Real Basketball Wives which, unlike hers, has nothing to do with the game. She would have been a hit there.

Given that Melo decided to stay in the Big Apple, Lala’s Full Court Life is going to be a dud of a season.

LaLa’s Full Court Life airs on M-Net Series Zone every Sunday at 2.30pm.
