Katy Perry

Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection

***

Katy Perry is made of sugar and spice… and fireworks.

Perry’s career has truly been a slow burner. When we first saw her as the doe-eyed on-screen love interest of Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy, we didn’t really know she’d become one of the biggest pop stars in the world one day.

As with her career, Perry’s taste in songs on the Complete Confection seem like throwaway pop numbers, but on a second or even third listen, you’ll find there is plenty of substance there.

The self-esteem pump-up joint, Firework, is one of them and the be-bold-anthem, Part of Me, is another. Sure, there are songs that sound as if they were made purely for shock value and chart-climbing (I wanna see your peacock-c**k, she sings in, well, Peacock).

On this reshuffling of the 2010 album, you can still hear ET featuring Kanye West and California Gurls with Snoop Dogg, but there’s also a remix of TGIF featuring Missy Elliot. Cute in parts and fierce in most. – Helen Herimbi
