YOU CANT SPOOK ME: Amitabh Bachchan and young Parth Bhalerao in Bhoothnath Returns.

Big B turns bhoot (ghost) again in Bhoothnath Returns, the sequel to his hit 2008 film, Bhoothnath. And as OneIndia.in’s Suparno reports, Amitabh Bachchan has dedicated a coveted award to younger actors on the scene…

MEGA star Amitabh Bachchan – who can next be seen in Bhoothnath Returns, from April 11 – won India’s Global Icon of the Year Award at the NRI (Non-Resident Indians) of the Year Awards.

However, the veteran actor dedicated the award to the Generation Y actors, saying he believes it is the younger generation who have made Bollywood popular across the globe.

“I am very thankful to all of you for honouring me with this award, but I think I am not the only person who should be honoured,” he said in his acceptance speech.

“There are many of my friends in the entertainment world, especially the younger generation actors, for whom the film industry is known all over the world – so I would like to dedicate the award to them all.”

The 71-year-old superstar, who has been in the industry for more than 40 years, also recalled his early career.

“When I had just started my career, I didn’t have many releases, but I started doing stage shows across the world and then I realised how much we are loved and how much we love them all.”

India’s Global Icon of the Year award recognises those who have become known internationally.

Bachchan’s upcoming movie, Bhoothnath Returns, sees him fighting wrong, as a ghost.

The movie’s prequel Bhoothnath (Lord of Ghosts) – a Bollywood comedy directed by Vivek Sharma – was an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde short story The Canterville Ghost. It was released in 2008, receiving generally positive reviews from critics and was well received by audiences, becoming a moderate success at the box office.

It was especially popular among children.

The performances by Bachchan, Juhi Chawla and Aman Siddiqui were hugely appreciated by critics and audiences alike.

Bhoothnath focused on little Aman Sharma, aka Banku (Siddiqui), who had moved into an old bungalow in Goa with his parents, Aditya (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Chawla).

They are made aware that the bungalow is haunted, but they disregard this. One night Banku goes down to the living room to have some ice cream and sees a shadow on the wall.

Frightened, he calls out to his mom and then sees that the bowl in which he was having ice cream has vanished.

Later he goes down again, past a sleeping Anjali, to investigate. It is then that he sees the ghost of Kailash Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) and they start arguing about whether Mr Nath is a ghost or an angel as Banku believes he is. Banku nicknames him “Bhootnath” as Mr Nath says he is a bhoot (ghost).

The ghost of Kailash Nath does not want anybody to occupy his house, and he tries different ways of scaring Banku and his mother, but the little boy considers him an angel and treats him like a friend.

Soon, Mr Nath is won over by his innocent love, especially after Banku falls from the stairs – a minor incident for which Mr Nath was responsible.

The two become friends.

But Mr Nath’s son returns from the US and plans to sell the bungalow.

Angered, Mr Nath scares the buyers, but Anjali comes to know about him.

He then tells his story to Banku and Anjali, saying his son deserted him at his time of need and left for the US.

Later, Aditya and Anjali decide to perform the final rites for Mr Nath to give him moksha (release). The rites are performed by Banku and Mr Nath bids an emotional farewell to him.

By this time, Mr Nath’s son has come to realise that he erred and apologises.

Banku is sad that Bhoothnath is no longer with him. Bhoothnath returns and says he is always there for him.

Bhoothnath Returns – which opens on April 11 – takes the story further. Mr Nath is taunted by other ghosts for bringing their community into disrepute by being bullied by a kid on Earth.

He eventually meets Akhrot, a slum child, and they take on a big cause. – oneindia.in
