TO NDR kaanchi 3_CITY_E1 Supplied ALL SET: Mishti, the 21-year-old Bengali actress who is set to make her mark in Bollywood in Kaanchi.

With the recent release of Kaanchi all eyes have been on director Subhash Ghai as the film marks his return to directing. OneIndia.in’s Nandhini and Bollywood Hungama News Network report…

SUBHASH Ghai is one cool person and is unfazed by the slow start his latest directorial project, Kaanchi, is having at the box office

The movie stars newcomer Mishti in the lead role, and the film-maker says patience is needed if there is a new cast.

“Whenever (a film-maker) makes a film with a newcomer, you don’t need the initial response. In fact, the day you script the film, you make up your mind that in the first two or three days of its release, the film will not do well,” Ghai told reporters at an event.

“But if anything is good, it picks up.”

TO NDR kaanchi 4_CITY_E1 Subhash Ghai .

Kaanchi, a musical thriller with a love story, hit the theatres on April 25 and has had a lukewarm response from audiences and critics.

Ghai is optimistic the film will pick up pace.

“A bit of patience is needed for a film made with a new cast, so just wait and see, everything will be fine in a few days. I know people are enjoying it,” he said.

The film chronicles the story of an innocent rural beauty and her fight against power and features Kartik Aryan, Mithun Chakraborty and Rishi Kapoor in key roles.

A BollywoodHungama.com report notes that Ghai – who made a comeback as a director with Kaanchi – was on cloud nine while filming.

Speaking while shooting in Uttaranchal, Ghai said he was having one of the most magical experiences of his life.

“The mystic mountains, mesmerising music, colourful dancers and a young crew… but what thrills me most is the performance of my heroine, Mishti, who is playing the title role. It reminded me how excited I was working with newcomers Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri in Hero in the 1980s.”

Ghai says a true film-maker is one who can make a hit using newcomers.

“I realised I’m at my best when I work with young talent as it’s a challenge for me. When they give good performances and the audience goes gaga, making them overnight stars, I feel like I’m on a high. They move on in life and I look forward to more fresh talent.

“At such times, I feel I am a film-maker in the truest sense. The real test for any film-maker is when he makes a film with newcomers in the lead roles and turns it into a blockbuster. I am an actor’s director: I first write the characters and then rewrite again after casting the actors, taking their positive and negative points into consideration.”

Ghai says Kaanchi will appeal to the youth.

“This is an aggressive and progressive film.

“Kaanchi is an interesting and unique character. She represents today’s youth and carves the guidelines for GenNext (Generation Next).

“The villains, Mithun Chakraborty and Rishi Kapoor, provide a lot of entertainment.

“However, the most surprising element of the movie is the three leading men – Kartik Tiwari, who plays the charismatic lover, Rishabh Sinha, who plays an obsessive lover, and Chandan Roy Sanyal, a corrupt police officer.

“I think Kartik is star material – while Rishabh’s screen personality is charming, and Chandan is undoubtedly a good actor.”

He was the sutradhar of the story, holding the threads of the story together.

Kaanchi is about the inner power of a woman, who represents millions of oppressed youth in fighting injustice in the country. – oneindia.in; bollywoodhungama.com
