Oscar buzz as Bond film breaks ground

Skyfall has become the first James Bond film to be nominated for best picture at the Producers Guild of America Awards.

The awards are often viewed as a marker for the Oscars.

Skyfall’s nomination comes days after its worldwide takings passed $1billion . It also has the record for most successful British film, after taking more than £100million at UK cinemas.

Thanks to the film’s box-office success, its main stars – Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes – are due a six-figure bonus. That will increase if Skyfall is among the Academy Award nominations, to be announced on Thursday.

The PGA winner has gone on to take best picture at the Oscars 16 times in the past 23 years. Skyfall’s rivals include of the Iran hostage drama Argo, produced by Ben Affleck and George Clooney, and Zero Dark Thirty. The list also features Ang Lee’s shipwreck tale Life of Pi and the quirky comedy Silver Linings Playbook.

TV series nominees include Downton Abbey and Homeland. The awards ceremony is in Los Angeles on January 26.
