GIG OF THE WEEK:

Tanga Pasi

Bluestockings|(tonight)

IF rich vocals, catchy vibes }and intelligent lyrics interest you, then be sure to get down to Bluestockings tonight as Zimbabwean national treasure, Tanga Pasi, will be performing.

Having just taken first place in the provincial Chibuku Road to Fame competition in Gwanda, the band travelled to South Africa. This is their second trip to Durban, after making an impact last year during the international COP17 event, when they headlined a two-week cultural festival at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Tanga Pasi consists of five members: Sinini Ngwenya on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Pamela Ngwenya on vocals, keyboard and wind instruments, Blessing Shamu on bass guitar, Mthakazelwa Nyathi on lead guitar and Caleb Dube on drums.

During their last tour to Durbs, the band received hearty welcomes from diverse audiences, who appreciated their fusion of reggae, Afro-jazz, folk, rock, kalanga rhythms and traditional Ndebele harmonies.

Tanga Pasi (meaning “starting from scratch”) started life as an a capella group in the western border town of Plumtree in June 2009, when Ngwenya gathered together a few friends in the dusty rural village of Ngwana. With little employment or entertainment in the area, Ngwenya decided to try to get the guys to learn to sing together and play guitars.

From these optimistic beginnings, Tanga Pasi are crafting new music. With a contemporary yet culturally grounded feel, they fuse styles, rhythms and instruments.

• Catch Tanga Pasi at Bluestockings tonight, 6 Dan Pienaar, Rd, Kloof. 7.30pm. R60. Bookings: Narene 083 659 3628. – Tonight Reporter
