GIG OF THE WEEK

Freshlyground

Live – the Venue (tonight)

FANS of Afro-fusion band Freshlyground will not want to miss the chance to see the award-winning group perform this weekend.

Going down at Live – the Venue tonight, drummer Peter Cohen says it’s going to be a real party with great dancing and a chance for everyone to see them up close in a more intimate setting.

Shedding light on their music and how it’s progressed over the years, he says: “It’s definitely evolved and continuing to do so. We have a song coming out very soon which is a different Freshlyground to what you’ve heard but we’re all in it and playing... it’s the people in the band who keep a constant throughout, but we need to keep changing the sound to keep ourselves interested.

“Music represents an infinite amount of things and it’s an amazing medium for spreading good vibrations and the world is always in need of that.”

With so many accolades to their name, what’s been their biggest highlight over the years?

“Tough question to a band that’s been around so long. I think having had the privilege of doing what we love in so many countries around the world is a serious accomplishment. At the moment, Freshlyground are working on new music which will be played at the gig tonight.”

According to Cohen, they’ve also got an American tour happening in June or July.

“There are quite a lot of gigs happening on our own continent, too, which is always very lekker.” – Valencia Govindasamy
