GIG OF THE WEEK

Africa Plus

KZNSA Gallery (tomorrow)

IF you’re in the mood for jazz, head over to KZNSA Gallery tomorrow as Africa Plus will perform.

Africa Plus is an innovative jazz trio based in Durban comprised of Lungelo Ngcobo on piano, Prince Bulo on bass and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums. The members were formally trained at UKZN and are sought after in South Africa and internationally. They have toured the US, Canada, Bolivia, Argentina, France, India, Mozambique, DRC, Swaziland and South Africa, to mention a few.

A press release states that the group draw musical influences from traditional African elements with a base from Western harmonies. They are an outfit full of rhythmic complexities and melodies with a programme that includes mainly original music composed by the band.

Their other material includes renditions of African standards that celebratie some of the great musicians of South Africa and arrangements of popular covers.

Their goal is to educate musicians about our diverse culture through music.
