PJ Powers
Stone Cradle (tomorrow)
From the ’80s to date, there is no doubt that PJ Powers has always pulled the crowds with her music. Affectionately known as Thandeka, Powers is a national treasure and few of her peers have managed to remain relevant the way she has. After releasing hot tracks like Jabulani and World In Union, the singer will remain etched in our memories for a long time.
With the xenophobic attacks in the country and defacing of historic statues, no one this weekend will have a better discography that can tackle these issues. As an anti-apartheid activist, Powers was banned in the ’80s after she performed in Zimbabwe with Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte.
She was nicknamed Thandeka, which means “the loved one” as a result of her appeal to the black market in South Africa and beyond.
