Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe delivers his speech at his party's 13th annual conference, in Gweru about 250 Kilometres south west of the capital Harare, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. Zimbabwe president's loyalists have converged for an annual party convention in the provincial city of Gweru, hoping to map out a winning election strategy to end a conflict-ridden four-year-old coalition. President Robert Mugabe said in the state media Friday the convention should prepare for a convincing victory "that will leave no room for doubt." The longtime leader has said he wants elections in March, a target that doesn't seem realistic. (AP Photo/Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi)

GIG OF THE WEEK:

Bongeziwe Mabandla

The Ascot Boutique, Norwood

(Tomorrow)

Bongeziwe Mabandla (pictured) is one of South Africa’s well-kept secrets. Well, that’s the problem right there, isn’t it? How can a musician who makes great music aspire to be a secret? Something is definitely wrong.

After studying the music industry for a few years, Mabandla made the call to release his debut album because he felt he was ready.

But whether the market was ready is another story because someone in his camp clearly does not give a damn when it comes to promoting this youngster, who has incredible talent and potential.

Okay, so you might be wondering why I am going on and on about this singer/songwriter and the answer to that lies in his aforementioned debut offering, Umlilo, an African traditional folk offering that will blow your socks off.

Yes, who, from the top of your head, is young and doing folk music? That’s what I thought.

Mabandla takes you back to a time when music was simple and came from the soul. His craft is a fusion of Xhosa folk rhythms that are mixed with contemporary sounds and hints of mbaqanga, soul and hip hop. If you tell me you have heard his music, I’d have to say you’re lying.

So, if you haven’t heard this man do his thing, make your way tomorrow to The Ascot Boutique (59 Grant Ave, Norwood).

It’s free and all your food and drink needs will be on sale.
