GIG OF THE WEEK

The Showdown Hip Hop Festival

Walter Sisulu Square, Soweto (Tomorrow)

Think of a local rapper who is at the top of his game. Ten bucks says that rapper forms part of tomorrow’s line-up in the Showdown Hip Hop Festival which will take place in Soweto at Walter Sisulu Square.

The line-up features the likes of Pro, AKA, iFani, Khuli Chana, Cashtime Fam, Teargas, Maggz, L-Tido and Da Les. There is no argument here, with the exception of a few omissions, that these are the current princes of South African hip hop.

Pro has been quiet for a bit, but he has just come up with some new material we are all looking forward to hearing. Again, being from Soweto, he is obviously going to be one of the artists the crowd will cheer for the most so you need to see his set.

AKA needs no introduction. Like Pro, he too has some new material which he will sample with the audience. With Da Les being on the roster, it is obvious they are going to do a track or two together.

Speaking of collaborations, Teargas will most definitely rope in their protegés, Cashtime Family, and will try to outdo the previous acts.

Maggz and L-Tido are just cool kids so they really have nothing to prove. They have paid their dues and are more for the ladies in the audience than anything else.

A line-up of DJs will include Vigilante, Dimplez, Milkshake, Sizwe, Ms Cosmo (pictured), Sphectacula and Naves, who will give you an alternative musical experience from what the rappers have to offer. While all DJs are awesome, look out for Ms Cosmo who is a joy to watch as she appears to enjoy what she does.

The show starts at noon. R100 at Computicket to get in and R150 at the door. – Munya Vomo
