“It was surprising when I was announced as winner because Brenden (Ledwaba) is a talented singer. I guess God knew what was going to happen,” said Musa Sukwene, the winner of Idols SA Season 9.

The 26-year-old narrowly beat his competitor, Ledwaba, by just over a thousand votes in the 2 million votes that were cast in the finale.

“Musa is a mentor to me and has helped me throughout the competition. I have learnt a lot in this competition, and a thousand votes is close, but I still won something out of this competition,” said Ledwaba.

Just like Elvis Blue and Lloyd Cele did a few years back, the two men decided to share the grand prize, but they would not talk about the details.

“We have a gentleman’s agreement, but we are not willing to discuss the details. It is no publicity stunt, but just something we agreed on a long time ago,” said Sukwene.

Looking back from where he started, Sukwene retold a tale of how hard he had worked to the top spot.

“I was a session musician for a long time. I worked in restaurants for a long time and I guess I was acquiring some experience,” he said.

The night started with eight evicted contestants from the Top 10 belting out a superb song that was filled with impressive dance moves and fireworks.

The crowd in attendance loved every minute of it, but it was clear they were divided on who they wanted to win between Sukwene and Ledwaba.

The two contestants took to the stage to perform songs they had done before in the competition.

Ledwaba sang Zahara’s Lengoma, and his fans loved it almost more than they did the first time around.

Sukwene then replied with DJ Vetkuk and Mahoota featuring Dr Malinga’s Via Orlando.

Award-winning group MiCasa performed their hit song Jika to lighten up things a bit.

Other performers included AKA, ChianoSky and last season’s Idols winner, Khaya Mthethwa. - The Star
