A world première takes place at the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra's concert in the City Hall on Thursday at 8pm with the first performance of Hendrik Hofmeyr's Sinfonia Africana.

This symphonically structured work for soprano, chorus and orchestra is based on three South African poems reflecting the country's history over the past century.

Hofmeyr, who won the South African Opera competition in 1987 while studying in Italy during 10 years of self-imposed exile, went on to win three international composition competitions.

He returned to South Africa in 1992 and is currently an associate professor at UCT.

The soprano part will be sung by Sabina Mossolow. Also taking part is the Stellenbosch University Choir under the direction of choirmaster André van der Merwe.

The concert, which features Brahms's popular concerto for violin and cello, with soloists Ruggero Allifranchini and Suren Bagratuni, will be directed by American conductor Lesley B Dunner.

The programme will be repeated in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch, on Friday at 8pm.
