If theatre is your thing, take note. Schools are invited to enter pupils who excel in drama for the National Acting Competition.

It’s a competition for high school pupils that has been organised by Bellville High School since 2002. For the last few years the competition was known as The City of Cape Town Acting Competition. From this year kykNET is the main sponsor and the competition will be known as the National Acting Competition.

Pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12 compete as individuals and not as part of a group or a drama pro- duction. After elimination rounds which are held across the country, 60 candidates will be selected to take part in the final four rounds at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town from May 16 to 18.

They aim to give individuals the opportunity to compare their abilities with those of other pupils country- wide and to develop creativity.

In addition to monetary prizes, the winner is also given the opportunity to appear in the soap Binneland on kykNET. But best of all, illustrious director Marthinus Basson also selected a cast of 11 actors involved in the competition who are part of the cast of the production X + Y, a play that includes well-known actors like Anna-Mart van der Merwe, Stian Bam, Brendon Daniels and Tinarie van Wyk-Loots and performed at the Suidoosterfees and later this year at the Woordfees. So your chances of sharing the stage with an amazing cast as well as being directed by one of the country’s most revered directors is also part of the deal.
