Bonang Matheba is causing a stir in Nigeria.
The presenter and radio DJ is a hot topic in Nigeria after she and Nigerian pop artist D’Banj fanned rumours that they were dating by posting a number of pictures that look like they were flirting.
Matheba and local choreographer Somizi Mhlongo were hosted by the entertainer in his home for four fun days in Lagos.
The gossip mill in both countries went crazy and soon headlines about the pair were everywhere, especially in Nigerian media.
Nigeriatell.com teased its readers about “D’banj’s new girl” and Gossip Nigeria News’s headline was “D’banj and his SA girlfriend Bonang Matheba”.
But it seems Matheba did not win everyone over.
South African blogger Sibongile Mafu went to bat for Matheba and tweeted: “Bonang is referred to as D’Banj’s ‘pretty South African girlfriend’ by these Nigerian tabloids. Do they not know our queen?”
Her tweet wasn’t taken lightly by one popular Nigerian blogger. It inspired a post on Linda Ikeji’s gossip blog that in turn spurred a heap of negative sentiments.
Blog follower Vivian Gills said: “Is it our fault that we don’t know her? She no be Mandela wife now… we don’t know you, we don’t know you.”
She was seconded by Sandra Obianujuaku, who said: “And the main fact remains that we didn’t know she existed until she started dating D’Banj.”
“Anonymous” added: “She should even be happy that they describe her as pretty, cos in my own opinion she’s not, compared to all de hot beautiful babes he (D’Banj) has dated.”
Though Matheba has kept mum on all the speculation surrounding her and D’Banj, her publicist, Zoe Msutwana, said: “Bonang is single. She and D’Banj are just close friends.”
And when Matheba’s on-and-off boyfriend, Euphonik, was asked what he thought about the rumours, he said: “It’s none of my business and I don’t care.”
