Cape Town - Sightings of the stars of The Giver, being filmed now in Cape Town, have been few and far between, with eager fans of big stars like Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes having to be content with following their idols via appearances on Twitter.

The film, based on Lois Lowry’s young adult science fiction novel, also stars Cameron Monaghan, Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush and Alexander Skarsgard.

The set is closed, but last weekend Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri were out and about, snapped enjoying an afternoon at Aquila Game Reserve. Holmes was also photographed by a fan, apparently looking out of her hotel window.

Fans of Swift have been pleading desperately on social media sites for anyone to hint at where she might be, but it turns out she’s been and gone, and is already back in Los Angeles.

Before she left, however, some lucky fans managed to snap her outside her hotel while saying goodbye to her co-stars Bridges, Monaghan and Skarsgard.

Another fan tweeted a picture of her walking through a Cape Town car park.

Monaghan, known for his role in the US version of the series Shameless, has been the most active in posting on Twitter and Instagram. He recently retweeted a picture of himself and two very excited looking young fans at Rihanna’s concert here. He is also the only one of the all-star cast to indicate that he has done any sightseeing, posting pictures of Table Mountain and seals.

His young co-star Rush posted a photograph on Instagram of her and Swift hugging and smiling, with the hash- tag Fiona and Rosemary on The Giver.

Very little has been leaked from the film set, with the only photo on social media showing Swift. All it’s possible to tell from that photo is that Swift’s blonde locks are covered by a brunette wig for her role.

Actor and film producer Ralph Winter posted on Twitter this week: “On day 12 for The Giver – all is great here in Cape Town! Phillip Noyce getting amazing footage.” And fellow producer Nikki Silver posted a photo to Twitter of Winter and Thwaites on-screen together.

The Giver is set to be released on August 15 next year. The book sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and is Harper Collins’s top-selling children’s eBook.

It has out-sold all other top teen novels, including JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
