SEX and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker may be synonymous with Carrie Bradshaw, but she isn’t sold on AnnaSophia Robb playing a teenage version of her popular TV and movie character.

In an interview with Mail Online, she dismissed the teen drama, based on Candace Bushnell’s novel, The Carrie Diaries, as “odd”.

She continued: “I’m not sure, I think it’s one of those tests of generosity. She (Robb) is a lovely girl and I want her to feel good about it, but it’s… odd.”

Proud of the fact that Sex and the City encourages women to be embrace their sexual desires à la Samantha Jones and unleash that inner fashionista, she says: “I hesitate to say whether we were the pioneers or whether we gave voice to something that was there, but I recognise there was a connection.”

While Jessica Parker may have her misgivings, The Carrie Diaries with Robb has been well received. In fact, the series has already been given the green light for a follow- on instalment.

The 19-year-old Colorado native, recognised for her roles in Because of Winn-Dixie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bridge to Terabithia, Race to Witch Mountain and Soul Surfer, has become the new It girl on TV and is pretty much all the rage like America Ferrera was in Ugly Betty.

And viewers will get to see Bradshaw navigate the teenage hurdles of high school while harnessing her innate passion to be a famous writer and coping with the death of her mother from cancer.

Her wayward sister, Dorritt, really pushes their grieving father Tom to the limit. Aside from her one-a-week internship at a law firm, she finds herself crushing on Sebastian Kydd, the “bad boy” new kid at Castlebury High School.

A fan of Sex and the City, Robb shares some of her likes in one interview.

“I love my Magnolia cupcakes and especially Jimmy Choo shoes. Just being in New York City. I feel like every woman thinks she’s a Sex and the City character. I mean, everything from walking down the street, going out to dinner with your friends or tripping over your heels – it’s all a New York moment.”

In another chat with Elle, she reveals: “Thankfully, I’m a little removed from it because I’m working all the time so I don’t really see the hustle and bustle. But there have been perks – the best being getting invited to movie screenings.”

Robb says one of her favourite outfits is in episode seven, where she is put in a fairy princess-like dress.

“It’s a lot of crinoline; its sea- foam green, pink and sparkly. It wasn’t the most comfortable, but certainly the most glamorous,” she laughs.

Although Jessica Parker may have her misgivings about the series, Robb is having a ball slipping into Bradshaw’s Manolo Blahniks. Clearly, the shoe fits as everyone is loving this rising TV star.

• The Carrie Diaries airs on M-Net Series Showcase (DStv channel 113) on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.
