Brothers do battle with the damnedComment on this story
The angels are homeless on Earth and the gates of hell are yet to be closed – that’s where the ninth season of the addictive paranormal drama, Supernatural, starts with the Wincester brothers, writes Debashine Thangevelo.
HORROR and supernatural offerings enjoy a loyal fan base. We have witnessed this with the third instalment of American Horror Story, Grimm, Ghost Whisperer, Ravenswood and Witches of East End.
And Supernatural has been satiating audiences’ voracious appetites for nine seasons.
Last season was rather tumultuous as Sam was conflicted about many things. While Dean tried to protect his younger brother, Sam was determined to prove himself as he underwent three very important tests to be able to close the gates of hell.
Once again, blood proved thicker than the cause and now Earth has become a battlefield between good and evil.
In an interview with Collider.com, the show’s executive producer, Jeremy Carver, dished out the deliciously juicy details about how they take the story forward this season.
He said: “It’s a broken landscape this season. Even for our big bads – Crowley found a stroke of humanity in him at the end of last year. So suddenly, we find ourselves in the position of, wow, is there something more to this guy? And I feel like that’s what we are trying to do with all of our main characters this year, in terms of trying to find another aspect to their personality that we haven’t showcased.
“There may be some moves that some of our characters make that fans don’t like, but I think they are going to understand them. We are really going to be driving the mythology around a big thing we can’t talk about. We are spending a lot of time with Crawley and Castiel as they come to grips with their new reality.”
As for where things stand with the brothers, Supernatural’s co-executive producer, Robert Singer, revealed: “Well, obviously we know that they chose each other over the trials and the closing of hell.
“And I think that was probably not shocking to most people because that is what the show is about – this brother bond that they have.
“The fact that they have wilfully chosen each other means that they are now going to need each other more than ever.
“And it’s a free for all on Earth now with these fallen angels, they still have the demons and they have to find a way to exist among all of this and still fight the good fight.”
While Sam and Dean’s love for each other often supersedes everything else, they have kept their fair share of secrets from each other in the past.
This time it’s different.
Jared Padalecki hinted at how Dean’s secret impacts on their relationship.
“It hasn’t happened yet as Sam doesn’t know about it. But Sam obviously didn’t get better when he stopped the trials.
“It has made me even more excited about shooting this season because Sam doesn’t know, but he is heavily involved.”
Fans will be delighted to know that Bobby Singer returns this season. Although the creatives are keeping mum about his role.
One thing is certain, this season is going to be one roller-coaster of a ride as the demons and angels find themselves unlikely neighbours.
It is going to be one helluva adrenalin rush!
• Supernatural airs tonight at 9pm on M-Net Series Showcase (DStv channel 113).
