GIG OF THE WEEK

NaKHane Toure and Bongeziwe Mabandla

The Bannister Hotel, Braamfontein (Thursday)

What do Nakhane Toure and Bongeziwe Mabandla have in common? They are both Sama-nominated (with Toure winning) musicians and hail from the Eastern Cape.

For the first time, the pair will share a stage to give us some of the hits that we have loved from their respective individual projects.

Toure gave us the experimental yet successful debut album, Brave Confusion, which was a fusion of traditional and alternative music. Some did not get it because it was not the usual kwaito, house or hip hop they were used to. It has the feeling of a time gone by, perhaps the ’60s. This is no surprise as the man let it known be that he is inspired by the likes of Nina Simone, Black Flag and Radio-head. So take that and fuse it with his Eastern Cape background and you get a canvas with layers of never-heard-before craftsmanship.

Then there is Mabandla, who was born in rural Tsolo where he showed a deep love for music at an early age. He went on to study drama at Afda, acted in Generations and then decided he wanted to concentrate on music.

This decision saw him invent his unique style which is called Afro-folk. He blends English and Xhosa with a lot of acoustic melodies to give his sound a rare feel.

You can tell that he has been influenced by likes of Tracy Chapman, Simphiwe Dana, Jabu Khanyile and Oliver Mtukudzi and if that’s your cup of tea, then you will enjoy his music.

So imagine having the two share a stage. Bliss. – Munya Vomo

• The show starts at 8pm at The Bannister Hotel (9 De Beer St, Braamfontein) on Thursday and R80 will get you in.
