GIG OF THE WEEK

The Dukes Combo

Sibaya iZulu Theatre

(Tomorrow and Sunday)

THIS weekend sees The Dukes Combo celebrate 50 years of music tomorrow and Sunday at Sibaya’s iZulu Theatre. The musical revue show Dukebox is a tribute which will cover some of the greatest music of the ’50s ’60s and ’70s.

A press release states that The Dukes Combo were formed in 1962 by Dee Sharma and they were at the forefront of shaping Durban’s dance band scene, thrilling crowds with their sultry sounds. The band were known for Latin ballroom music and covers of the popular music of the time. Fifty-three years later, the band is still rocking.

“The Dukes have always been the people’s band. So with Dukebox we’re letting the people choose the songs they want from the Dukes’ vast catalogue. There will be a lot of audience interaction and a lot of fun had on stage. Every show will be different,” says keyboardist, Anthony Joseph.

The press release further states that The Dukes have enjoyed much success outside of South Africa, having been well received in Swaziland and Lesotho during the isolation years. – Tonight Reporter
