WHILE there are a host of reality TV shows that document the daily lives of magicians and illusionists, you can never experience the magic better than through a live show.

That’s what popular illusionist Ricki Gray had to say when we asked him about Tricky Business, the South African Magical Society’s annual showcase which is at the Rhumbelow Theatre this weekend.

“Magic has suffered a setback with the tricks that you see on TV shows, but you can’t compare a magic or illusion show that’s performed live to a magic or illusion show that’s been created in the editing room. What we do is live every night,” he explained.

“When you arrive at the Rhumbelow you’ll be entertained by an allocated magician who’ll do a bit of table magic. This is to set the atmosphere and also give the artist a chance to connect with the audience,” he said.

Gray, who is also the vice-president of the society, said Tricky Business is not just a magic show where you will see variations of the same thing.

“The show has been very carefully choreographed so that you don’t see the same thing in the show. There are also a few big illusions; it’s not just card and rope tricks.”

Adding an extra element of pizzazz to this year’s show are saxophonist Charl Rousseau and a team of dancers.

“I like to see twists and turns in a show. I’ve taught the dancers an illusion and they make it part of their act. I like quirky,” said Gray.

Tricky Business is produced and directed by Gray and features 10 entertainers.

The show runs from June 21 to 23 with shows at 8pm on Friday and Saturday, and 6.30pm on Sunday. Tickets are R100.

Pensioners and block bookings of eight or more are R75 a ticket. Book at Computicket or call Roland on 031 205 7602.
