COMEDY meets song and dance as old school entertainment makes its way to Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World with Muthu’s Café.
The brainchild of popular entertainer, Muthu Murugan, the show will be a live, stand-up comedy show set in a bar.
Murugan and fellow comedians Sagie Murugan, Neville Pillay and Masood Boomgaard will be supported by Leona Dean and her dancers, trendy pantsula dancers and pop singer, Judith Makozi.
Murugan, who will lead the comedy line-up, explained the concept and objective of the show.
“I’m taking people back to the old days when hotel bars would have events every day of the week; a supper club on a Sunday, Tuesday was comedy night, ladies night on Wednesday and so on.
“So I’m taking the audience through the yesteryear-style hotel bar entertainment.
“The show will have some stand-up comedy with a mix of Bollywood dance and some music in between. I’ll be hosting the comics as we take the audience through the different eras of entertainment,” he explained.
A loose script will also touch on yesteryear and some of the cabaret artists who used to perform at these hotels.
“Makozi will be performing a few cabaret acts along these lines.
“If you look at music today it’s an arrangement of noise. If you look at yesteryear’s music, it’s an arrangement of sounds…
“I also want to show people that in yesteryear we didn’t have to be vulgar to be entertaining. Good humour and entertain- ment is in the masterfulness of the act.”
Known for arranging a host of entertainment shows that tour communities in KwaZulu-Natal, Murugan shared that his objective as a promoter was to expose locals to the immense talent in the province.
“In South Africa we have talent, but we don’t have people to develop the talent.
“If you ask our artists who inspire them, they mostly give an international name, why not a local?
“This is exactly why I use local dancers and performers in my shows. I want to showcase the up-and-coming talent we have.”
