Cape Town - IT MADE a critical and commercial splash back in 1973 when it was created, and it’s still going strong.

The Rocky Horror Show was originally created as a stage musical tribute to science fiction and horror B-grade movies, but it has become such a cult classic that it now gets referenced instead of the other way around.

And now Capetonians get a chance to take a jump to the left and a step to the right as The Fugard Theatre presents its winter musical – opening on July 10 – Richard O’Brien’s iconic rock musical.

The Rocky Horror Show has travelled the world since making its debut at The Royal Court Theatre in London 40 years ago. Totally outrageous back when it debuted, it still has the power to entertain and provoke, even if the cheesy factor has really gained in strength over the years.

The show tells the story of a newly engaged couple, Brad (Paul du Toit) and Janet (Jenny Stead) who are caught in a storm and seek refuge at the home of a madcap transvestite scientist named Dr Frank-n-furter (Brendan van Rhyn).

The doctor unveils his latest creation – a muscle man named Rocky Horror – and much hilarity and horror ensue.

The fun part for the audience is the participation and over the years an entire ritual calling for an elaborate prop kit when viewing the film, has evolved.

Whether The Fugard Theatre will be going with the flow of dry rice, water pistols, newspapers, rubber gloves and flashlights remains to be seen, though.

• The Fugard Theatre is up for a re-model over the next few months, which should improve sight-lines for all seats in the main auditorium. Performances are from Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm, plus 4pm on Saturdays.Tickets from R90 to R230 through Computicket or the Fugard box office on 021 461 4554.
