Durban - Liam Joyce and Alyssia Birjalal scout out Durban’s Chartwell Drive and Swapo Road for the best foodie places. Here’s their verdicts...

LIAM JOYCE

There is something about Chartwell Drive and uMhlanga village that I have always liked. Over the years it has become uMhlanga’s answer to Florida Road.

Once you find a parking spot, you will find that this area has a lot to offer. I appreciate its many diverse offerings, from breakfast to dinner, drinks and even a fast food burger in between.

l The George

Shop 5 Lighthouse Mall

Although I am not a fan of the food, you can’t beat the unpretentious nature of this establishment, which has been around for ages. It’s the perfect spot to watch your favourite sports team play while having a beer. I like the outside patio area, it’s great on a sunny day to do some people watching.

l Fourteen on Chartwell

14 Chartwell Drive

One of the newest arrivals also happens to be one of the most popular.

You will see the suited businessman, the lady in red heels and, of course, a vodka loving group of friends.

Although this place is posh, it doesn’t scream it. It’s understated with elegant interiors that are not pretentious, although I must admit, some of its patrons are. The menu is interesting and original.

I am a huge fan of seafood and any place that does a great grilled prawns. Fourteen on Chartwell does exactly that. Their Durban curry is also a must try.

If food isn’t really your thing, just have a look at the drinks menu, you will be blown away – I loved every page.

l Joita’s

1 Chartwell Drive

I might be a little biased towards this place because of my Portuguese heritage, but every time I walk through their doors, I feel like I am in Cascais. The service is great, the food is even better.

l Little Havana

Grenada Square, 16 Chartwell Drive

Set in Granada Square, Little Havana is a buzzing establishment that attracts a young crowd at night and a more mature one when the sun is out.

The décor pays homage to Cuba and so does some of the food. If you are big on partying, this place is a good party starter or even a party ender, it all depends on your mood.

Alyssia Birjalal

For years, Swapo Road (Broadway) in Durban North has been my go-to street. It’s vibey and has something for everyone, including some of the best restaurants, bars, cake shops and boutiques.

Whether you are looking for a simple takeaway or a lavish dinner for two, you will be catered for.

And if you are planning to paint the town red, Broadway’s a good place to start before going on to dance the night away.

l Lupa Osteria, 6-12 Swapo (Broadway)

Cuisine: Italian

Lupa successfully combines the warmth of a neighbourhood restaurant with a playful atmosphere. If you’re looking for casual dining, this should be top of your list. The food is great and the service is top drawer.

l Atasca, 1 Kensington Centre, Adelaide Tambo Drive

Cuisine: Portuguese

If you’re looking for good quality Portuguese cuisine, this is the place to go. The quality of their food is consistently high.

The service and ambience are good and, although the waiters are attentive, they are never obtrusive. It’s a fine dining experience that may leave you with a bit of a dent in your wallet, but it’ll have been worth the money.

Be sure to book.

l Republik, Unit 8 Swapo (Broadway)

Republik is the place you go when you feel like a beer, a gourmet burger and a few tunes. They also offer signature chows, desserts and milkshakes.

Its homely atmosphere will have you staying put for hours.

The young and trendy waiters take care of you, making sure you never have an empty glass or plate.

You’re bound to have a blast and if there’s a football game on, you’re in for more of a treat.

Republik is currently under renovation but will be reopening on February 26.
