Why Riebeek Kasteel is paradise for art lovers

Western Cape

Cape Town - The picturesque Swartland region of the Western Cape plays host to many internationally recognised artists who call the area home, and who derive much inspiration from the surrounding landscape, people, cultures and activities.

An annual art exhibition takes place in Riebeek Kasteel at The Gallery which provides a local platform for these renowned artists to showcase their work “in their own backyard”, as the saying goes.

The event has become highly anticipated on the events calendar for art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

This year’s event, which kicks off on December 4 with an official opening by South African author and columnist Max du Preez (also a resident of Riebeek Kasteel), and runs until the end of February 2017, sees an impressive line-up of artists.

Highlight exhibitors include renowned names such as Andre van Vuuren, Philip Barlow, Jenny Parsons, Solly Smook, Pippa Lea Pennington, JP Meyer, Claire Menck, Andre du Toit and acclaimed SA ceramist Ann Marais.

The Gallery has developed a solid reputation amongst talented South African artists, and Astrid McLeod, owner and curator of The Gallery says that she is pleased and proud to have secured this line up of artists for this year’s Summertide exhibit.

“When I opened The Gallery four years ago it was with the intent of providing the many local artists in the area with a platform to exhibit their art works - before that there was no central venue that afforded them this possibility. Four years on and The Gallery, along with the annual Summertide exhibition, is attracting an increasingly stellar line up of artists.”

McLeod goes on to say that visitors to the Summertide exhibition will be treated to an extraordinary mix of fresh, contemporary, mostly two dimensional artworks in a variety of mediums.

“This year the theme is open ended and allows the artists the freedom of interpretation. Summertide is a must-see on the calendar this summer.”
