LIVING HIS DREAM: Singer Selim Kagee looks out over the New York city skyline.

Cape Town - Singer Selim Kagee’s signature sound is defined by a romantic combination of classical and pop influences. He sings in English and Italian, languages that complement his warm, richly textured classical voice.

The Cape Town-based singer has been training vocally for the past 10 years and has performed leading roles in popular musical theatre classics, such as The King and I, Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music and The Boyfriend.

He has also performed at former president Thabo Mbeki’s residence. He recently released his debut album Cry for Love (Piango D’Amore).

How widely have you travelled?

I’ve travelled to the US, Britain, France, Italy, India and Zambia

Your worst experience on a holiday?

En route to Delhi in India, driving through extreme smog and catching the “Delhi belly” (diarrhoea).

Your funniest experience?

On the Tube in London, I pretended my friend was a complete stranger then chatted her up in front of everyone, to the passengers’ amazement and our amusement.

What do you avoid during a holiday?

A glass of Calcutta’s finest tap water.

Best meal abroad?

The buffet dinner at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai.

Your favourite place for sundowners at home or abroad?

At the top of Lion’s Head at full moon.

What have you learnt from your travels?

There is good and bad in everyone and in all cultures.

Ideal travelling companion?

The love of my life.

Culture vulture or adrenalin junkie?

Culture vulture.

Greatest travel luxury?

Flying aboard a first-class private aircraft.

Holiday reading?

Reader’s Digest.

Favourite drive?

From Milan into the Italian countryside.

Dream trip?

Visiting the West Coast of the US and Graceland.

As a seasoned traveller and flyer, can you share some tips?

Repackage your lotions and potions into smaller containers to save space.

Cut your nails painfully short the night before so you don’t have to carry a nail clipper.

Exercise before a long flight, your blood will circulate better and you will sleep easier on the flight.

Avoid carrying transparent bags of icing sugar at the bottom of your suitcase, as this may cause very serious delays.
