London - Men splash out an average of £205 (about R4 000) on new clothes for a holiday, while women spend just £166, a study reveals.

Researchers also found one in ten Britons buys a whole new wardrobe before going on a summer holiday – but we wear only two thirds of the clothes we pack.

About 36 percent of men splash out to “get in the holiday mood” while 37 percent of women simply like shopping for summer clothes and use holidays as an excuse, according to the study by parcel service CollectPlus.

Just over a tenth of women said they like to be “on trend” and they are nearly twice as likely as men to buy new clothing to fit in with locals.

But for a third of those surveyed, a key reason for buying a new holiday wardrobe is for a confidence boost.

Overall, Britons will spend £4.3-billion on holiday clothes this summer. Only a quarter admit they have not yet bought new outfits for their trip.
