Around 500 grandparents and 1,500 Britons aged 11 to 25 were polled to mark the launch of the film Parental Guidance, starring Bette Midler and Billy Crystal as a pair of old-fashioned grandparents.

London - The traditional idea of Grandma and Grandad being behind the times when it comes to new technology is itself behind the times, a study shows.

About 78 percent of grandparents now say that they consider themselves to be competent in online communication.

Around a half email regularly, a quarter own a laptop, while one in ten owns a top-of-the-range tablet computer.

A quarter of young adults said they now keep in touch with their grandparents by text, email, Facebook, instant messaging and Twitter.
