Bravo, Gerrie Nel
ADVOCATE Gerrie Nel has been finally recognised – after a rollercoaster experience that included being locked up in full view of his family and the glare of press cameras and charged like a common criminal.
Now, though, the man who doggedly pursued disgraced national police commissioner Jackie Selebi has been seen for the very qualities that almost had him thrown behind bars on trumped-up charges.
Today it is Selebi, the former head of Interpol, who is behind bars for corruption while Nel is about to receive the International Association of Prosecutors special achievement award.
It’s fitting recognition for a man who played a leading role in righting one of the most shameful episodes of our democratic history.
The true travesty is why he hasn’t been suitably recognised right here at home.
