SA drug crisis needs no-bail legislation

Well said, Francoise Campbell (we are not related). This is the first time I have read a letter in The Star regarding the drug trade that makes sense (“Fight against drug smuggling needs new focus”, The Star, June 27). Human trafficking has finally been declared a crime in SA.

This crime goes together with drug trafficking, money laundering and prostitution.

We need to have drug dealing in SA declared a priority crime and we also need to have a dedicated SAPS drug unit reinstated. As the law stands, our Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992 is totally ineffective because the dealers get bail and disappear.

Twenty years ago we did not have this situation. Unless the law is changed, there will be no future for our children.
