A total of 37 000 police officers are employed in Gauteng’s 37 police stations.

According to the chairman of the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board, Andy Mashaile, the province has more than 8 000 street patrollers who are affiliated to the 137 community police forums operating in Gauteng.

Soweto has two police clusters, covering all the police stations in Soweto.

The Moroka cluster is comprised of seven police stations, with each having a dedicated CPF desk. The street patrollers are a sub-programme of the CPFs.

Also included as a sub-programme are neighbourhood watches, community associations and the Youth Crime Prevention Desk.

The Moroka cluster covers Dobsonville, Jabulani, Naledi, Protea Glen, Lenasia South, Lenasia and Moroka.

The chairman of the CPF in the cluster is Peter Rataemane. He can be phoned on 078 195 6432, 011 931 1026 or 011 934 2222.

The Orlando cluster covers the Kliptown, Eldorado Park, Diepkloof, Meadowlands and Orlando police stations.

It is headed by Chris Maduna, who can be contacted on 011 983 4841/4 or 083 421 8893.

Maduna said there were about 700 street patrollers in his cluster. There were 132 street patrollers in Eldorado Park alone.
