Time for Joburg pensioners to reapply for rates rebates

The City of Joburg invites pensioners who have not applied for property rates rebates to apply.

The application for pensioners’ rebates needs to be done every two years.

Existing pensioners who have not reapplied must do so, because the rebate ended on June 30.

Pensioners’ rebates are grouped into three categories:

l Those dependent on a national security grant – 100 percent rebate, subject to criteria.

l Pensioners whose gross monthly earnings are less than R5 600 – 100 percent rebate, subject to criteria.

l Those whose gross monthly earnings are higher than R5 600 but less than R10 300 – 50 percent rebate, subject to criteria.

To qualify a pensioner must:

l Be the owner of the property where the rates are charged.

l Live on the property.

l Be at least 60 years old.

l In addition, the total value of the property as per the general valuation roll, that is, the land plus the improvements, may not exceed R1.5 million.
