Johannesburg - MTN - Africa’s largest cellular operator by numbers - says it has inked a wage deal in South Africa.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the cellular operator says the agreement was signed with the Communication Workers’ Union.

It says the new salary agreement “paves the way for more stability at the workplace”.

Signing of the agreement comes in the backdrop of a recognition agreement that both parties signed last year. It did not give details of the deal.

Launched in 1994, MTN operates in 22 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East and has 203 million subscribers.

Its profit slumped 50 percent in the year to December after it agreed to pay a multi-billion rand fine to Nigerian authorities for failing to cut off unregistered subscribers.

MTN SA CEO Mteto Nyati says the company is “pleased and satisfied that it has reached an agreement with the CWU on many issues including minimum wage and pay for performance.

“The signing of this agreement is a clear sign that a strong and stable MTN is in the interest of both parties.

“The agreement is underpinned by the importance of safeguarding the welfare of our employees.”
