Johannesburg - The Right2Know Campaign group slammed Vodacom and MTN’s ploy to have over-the-top services (OTTs) regulated, calling it an attempt to protect profits at the cost of consumers.

Vodacom and MTN posed their argument at the portfolio committee on telecoms and postal services, citing that OTTs were a threat to network providers’ revenue.

However, Right2Know said consumers did pay for OTT services in the form of data purchased at “extortionate airtime rates”, which was profitable for network operators.
