Discovery headquarters in Sandton goes green

CAPE TOWN - The Discovery new headquarters office building located in Sandton has recently received a 5-Star - Green Star rating by the Green Building Council South Africa.

Some of the features which have contributed to the rating include energy optimisation through the advanced design features of its envelope and building services.

The latter are some of the GBCSA requirements - an independent organisation which works with its membership community to sustainably transform the built environment to design, build, operate greener buildings through advocacy, membership, certification and training.

"The building is wrapped around a series of sunlit atria that plug into a central concourse. The design of the atria and skylights result in an abundance of natural light without compromising occupants’ comfort and energy performance. Grey and rainwater systems, efficient sanitary fittings, efficient irrigation system and water-wise landscaping contribute to the building’s optimal water performance," the Growthpoint's statement read.

It is understood that Growthpoint owns 55% of the property and Zenprop 45%. Discovery is expected to occupy the building at the end of this year.

GBCSA Executive Director: Certifications, Manfred Braune notes that this is the largest new building certified as Green Star to date in South Africa, which makes it an incredible achievement.

Zenprop Property Holdings CEO, James Tannenberger says they have been involved in developing Green Star buildings since the commercial rating tool was first launched in South Africa in 2008 and they are satisfied with what the development team's achievements.
