CAPE TOWN - The average mobile data speed in South Africa is 20Mbps and the average mobile upload speed is 9Mbps.

This comes after My Broadband released its first quarter (Q1) speed test results for Cape Town.

142 537 speed tests were conducted by the company’s Android and iOS Speed Test app users.

The speed tests derived from users all across the country.

On average, the results are considered good. However, the same cannot be said for all neighbourhoods.

With regards to the fastest mobile network in South Africa, MTN holds the crown.

MTN has put to bed much debate about which mobile network is the fastest in SA.

In January, MyBroadband’s Mobile Network Quality Report for South Africa's published a report, which assessed the last quarter (Q4) 2017 performance of the four mobile networks.

MTN hailed in as the fastest mobile network. Boasting an average download and upload speed, MTN ranked the highest average of any network with 22.22Mbps and 10.07Mbps. Latency, the performance of the hosted desktop's system also outperformed with 50Mbps on average. This, from 28 870 tests.

A month later, Telkom decided to test the speed of WiFi networks using a new technology, to decipher the fastest speed it can reach. Telkom conducted it's first demonstration of 2.3GHz LTE TDD Massive MIMO (Advanced Multiple Antenna System) in Africa and has deemed it as successful.

Telkom said that with the new technology, Massive MIMO, Telkom customers can experience data speeds of up to five times faster than current 4G technology.

"This will result in better throughput speeds and improved coverage, leading to a better overall experience for consumers", Telkom said in a statement.

Essentially, Telkom customers can experience WiFi speeds of up to 600 Mbps, according to Telkom.
