Johannesburg - Harmony Gold Mining on Monday announced that an employee had died in a mine accident underground at its Welkom operation in the Free State over the weekend.

“Harmony regrets to advise that an employee was fatally injured in an underground rail-bound related incident,” the mine said in a statement.

“The accident occurred at Harmony's Phakisa mine on Saturday, near Welkom in the Free State province. Investigations into the accident are under way.”

Harmony's management team expressed their condolences to members of the deceased's family, friends and colleagues.

A Harmony Gold employee died in a fall at the Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville in Johannesburg in April this year.

Before then, the last fatal accident at a Harmony Gold operation occurred in November 2015 where a worker died in a fall of ground accident at the Masimong mine in the Free State.
