Cape Town - Former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene did not know about his firing from office until the very day President Jacob Zuma made the announcement.

This was according to an interview that the news channel eNCA aired on Tuesday morning.

In the interview, Nene - who looked relaxed and was speaking from his home in Kranskop, KwaZulu-Natal - said he would soon be ending his “garden leave” and joining the private sector.

He did not want to furnish any further details about his next role as he said it was in bad taste to do so before commencement of employment.

When Nene was fired in favour of backbencher Des van Rooyen, the Presidency said it was a move to get Nene to the recently-opened BRICS Development Bank.
