Platinum producer Impala Platinum (Implats) had declared force majeure on its contracts with companies that supply goods and services to its main Rustenburg mine due to a five-week strike, a spokesman said yesterday. Force majeure is a legal term for events outside a company’s control. In contract law, a declaration of force majeure allows certain terms of an otherwise legally binding agreement to be ignored.
