Sun International is planning a R3 billion entertainment, hotel and shopping complex at the new Tshwane suburb of Menlyn Maine, provided the Gauteng Gambling Board gives it permission to relocate the existing Morula casino there from Mabopane.

Applying for permission for the relocation, Sun International chief executive Graeme Stephens said the existing casino was difficult to reach.

Listing advantages of the relocation, he said it would provide an estimated 10 000 jobs during the construction phase and 2 200 once gaming started in the new casino.

Sun International estimates that R1.7bn will be raised in gaming taxes in the first five years of operation, while about R32 million will be invested in social and enterprise development.

The planned Sun International component of Menlyn Maine – Time Square – would include a five-star hotel with 100 luxury rooms and 10 suites.

It would have an indoor entertainment arena seating 8 000 people that can be used for concerts, sports events, a convention centre or exhibition area.

Time Square would also have a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants. – Audrey D’Angelo
