A fatality had occurred at Harmony Gold Mining’s Tshepong mine near Welkom in the Free State on Friday, the company reported yesterday.

“Investigations into the accident are under way and all trackless vehicles at the mine have been stopped until the cause for the accident has been established,” South Africa’s third-largest gold producer said in a statement.

Last month Harmony reported two fatalities at its Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville and the Evander mine.

JSE-listed Harmony warned that it would miss its production target after losing output worth R325 million at the Kusasalethu mine during a 23 day unprotected strike.

The shares jumped 3.58 percent higher to close at R68.93 yesterday. – Dineo Faku
