HSBC, Europe's biggest bank, has appointed Andrew Dell as the bank's chief executive officer for South Africa, effective from April 1, according to an internal announcement seen by Reuters on Thursday.

Dell takes up the new role in addition to his current position as head of debt capital markets for the bank's central and eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.

The move ties in with HSBC's push to develop new business in sub-Saharan Africa. Dell will relocate to Johannesburg from the United Arab Emirates, two sources said.

Dell joined HSBC in 2004. In 2010, he was also appointed co-head of Africa sovereigns. - Reuters
