INTERNATIONAL - Toyota  Motor Corporation was recalling an additional 1.17million vehicles globally over potentially defective airbag inflators produced by Takata, the carmaker said yesterday.

Its latest recall included 249 000 cars in Japan and 210 000 in Europe, a spokesperson said.

The recall coversed Alphard, Vellfire, Corolla Rumion and Noah or Voxy models, Japan’s largest carmaker said. The faulty airbag inflators have forced carmakers to recall about 100 million vehicles globally.

The airbags could rupture explosively when deployed in a collision, sending metal shrapnel into drivers as well as passengers. The defective airbags have caused more than 20 deaths worldwide. In June, Takata filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan and the

US.
