JOHANNESBURG - South Africa precious metals producer Sibanye-Stillwater has issued termination letters to over 2,000 workers at its Cooke gold operation which it is now mothballing, the National Union of Minworkers said on Tuesday.

A Sibanye spokesman said he could not immediately confirm the details but the company said in early August it was planning job cuts at a number of its operations and commenced talks with unions about them as required by law. It has since shelved plans to cut jobs at some of its platinum mines.
