Vive, the new virtual reality headset from HTC, is to hit markets in April, later than originally planned, the company has announced.

The plan is now to first introduce a prototype of the glasses at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which runs January 6-9, clearing the way for sales to begin in April. There had earlier been hopes the device would be released in the dying days of the current year.

The glasses were designed in cooperation with Valve, which designed the Steam internet exchange platform. HTC thinks the goggles will have uses in entertainment and games, but also sees potential in education, medicine and trade.

The company did not name an expected price for Vive, but it is possible that number will emerge at CES. It may be that it will cost more than competing virtual-reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and Playstation VR, which are also expected in the first half of 2016.

Samsung has already finished work on its Gear VR spectacles, which it designed in cooperation with Oculus. The Gear, an add-on for new high-end Samsung smartphones, will sell for about 100 euros (110 dollars).
