Cape Town - Eskom implemented Stage 1 load shedding at 6am on Thursday morning.

South Africa’s power utility said the rolling power cuts would continue from 6am until 10pm on Thursday as the national electricity grid was under severe strain.

The country has experienced load shedding on a daily basis since the weekend.

On Wednesday, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown held a press conference in Cape Town to assure South Africans that the grid was not in danger of a total collapse, despite Stage 3 power cuts.

“Load shedding at Stage 3 shows the seriousness of the constraints that we face but it is in no way an indication that we are close to a black-out,” Brown said.
