CAPE TOWN - A 28-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years behind bars earlier this week by the Wynberg Regional Court for killing a 37-year-old man.

According to a statement the Western Cape police issued on Friday, the accused - Byron Davids - murdered the 37-year-old man for allegedly impregnating his girlfriend.

Police spokesman Andrè Traut said Davids was sentenced earlier this week for killing Denzil Thorpe in September last year.

Davids was arrested and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on the same day as the murder, and was also sentenced to 15 years for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for the possession of ammunition. The three sentences will be served concurrently.
