Cape Town - Beaufort West's tourism office has confirmed there were snowfalls in the Karoo town on Wednesday, as a low pressure trough swept across the country, bringing unseasonably low temperatures.

"Yes, it snowed in the Karoo National Park and there were also recorded snowfalls on a farm in the mountains behind Beaufort West," a spokesperson said.

Social media was abuzz with the news, with a number of pictures being shared on Twitter and Facebook.

And it looks like the high lying areas of the country will still be turned into a winter wonderland for the rest of the week.

"There will be no more snowfalls for the Western Cape as the weather system has moved through," Cape Town Weather Office forecaster Michael Barnes said.

"There will be snow for the Eastern Cape Northern interior, Lesotho, and south-western KwaZulu-Natal."

The snow in the Western Cape would be a welcome boon for the crippling drought experienced in the province.

The melting snow would do wonders to recharge reserves of groundwater.
