Cape Town - A nine-year-old girl died after a fire destroyed her family's informal dwelling in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town on Thursday night. 

Three informal structures were destroyed, and two formal structures were partially damaged in the fire, leaving eight people homeless. 

"The City's fire and rescue service responded to Camelia street Bonteheuwel at 10.42 (Thursday) night," the City of Cape Town's Theo Layne said.

"Three informal structures were destroyed as well as two formal dwellings partially damaged. Eight persons were displaced. 

"One female minor, approximately 9 years old, suffered smoke inhalation. CPR was initiated but was unsuccessful.

"No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined," he said. 

SAPS was investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

It took one jet and three pumps to extinguish the blaze.
