CAPE TOWN - The cold weather did not deter enthusiastic young athletes from participating in the 2017 Western Province Street Athletics series in Athlone.

This was the third edition of the series, and the first time for the Top Forum Athletics Club, which is also affiliated to Western Province Athletics, as the hosts.

The parents of Gleemore Park permitted their kids to participate, but others feared they would get sick as it was raining.

“We were expecting about 60 children to join us but unfortunately we received fewer due to the weather. At first it was all quiet, but thankfully, a teacher at a nearby school brought his pupils to join us,” said Top Forum club chairperson Russell Mehl.

“We are here to identify talent within our community. We want to encourage these children to know they are more than the social problems they have and live in.”

WPA Street Athletics, supported by the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, is a series of community events where youngsters are invited to participate and compete against each other over short and medium distances.

The first two events were held in Eerste River and Nantes.
